Mother Meera, born Kamala Reddy, is revered by her followers as an embodiment of the Divine Mother (Shakti or Devi). She allegedly had her first samādhi, a state of complete spiritual absorption, at the age of six. Her uncle, Bulgur Venkat Reddy, recognized her divinity and took care of her, allowing her to unfold her inner experiences. In 1974, she was brought to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, India, where she began giving darshan (spiritual audience) to Westerners. She is no longer associated with the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Mother Meera has since traveled extensively, giving darshan to thousands of visitors from all religions.
During darshan, Mother Meera conducts a ritual in silence, touching a person's head and looking into their eyes. It is believed that she unties knots in the person's subtle system and fills them with light. She does not charge any money for this and does not give lectures. Mother Meera's purpose is to bring a dynamic light-force from the Supreme to make spiritual progress easier on Earth. She emphasizes the importance of devotion (Bhakti) to God and accepts all denominations. She does not claim to be a guru or have followers, and her teaching focuses on the unity of all religions.
Mother Meera's connection to Sri Aurobindo and the Mother is notable, as she had reportedly met them in their subtle bodies when she was a child. However, she does not adhere to any particular tradition and teaches that everyone can follow their own path as long as they connect with the light every day through prayer, reading, or meditation.
There have been critics of Mother Meera, including writer Andrew Harvey, who accused her of homophobia after their separation. However, the accusation is disputed by others who have had close associations with her.
