Maharshi Mehi Paramhans, also known as Gurumaharaj, was a saint in the tradition of Sant Mat. He studied various religious texts and concluded that the essential teachings of all these scriptures are the same. He emphasized the practice of Satsang (spiritual discourse) and Dhyan (meditation) as the one and easiest method to attain Moksha (liberation). Mehi was a disciple of Baba Devi Sahab and later became the guru of Akhil Bhartiye Santmat Satsang.
Mehi was born on April 28, 1885, in Majhua Village, Bihar, India. He received his early education and later studied with Baba Devi Sahab. Following his teacher's instructions, Mehi spent several years in intense meditation at an ashram in Manihari, Katihar district.
Mehi's spiritual journey involved encounters with multiple gurus. He was initiated by Mr. Ram Jha, a Brahmin priest, and later became a disciple of Ramanand Swami. However, Mehi realized that his quest for liberation required knowledge of Sound/Word Meditation (Surat Shabda Yoga), which Ramanand Swami was not familiar with. In his search, Mehi met Mr. Dhiraj Lal, a disciple of Baba Devi Sahab, who provided satisfactory clarifications to Mehi's inquiries. Eventually, Mehi received initiation from Mr. Rajendra Nath Singh before finally meeting Baba Devi Sahab, who became his true Guru.
Mehi's devotion to Sant Mat led him to spread its teachings and take the tradition to greater heights.
