Mirabai, also known as Meera, was a 16th-century Hindu mystic poet and devotee of Krishna. She was born into a Rajput royal family in Rajasthan and is celebrated as a Bhakti saint in the North Indian Hindu tradition. Mirabai's life is surrounded by legends that highlight her fearless disregard for social and family conventions, her devotion to Krishna, and her persecution by her in-laws. While millions of devotional hymns are attributed to her, scholars believe that only a few hundred are authentic, with most of them being written down in the 18th century. Mirabai's poems, composed in Rajasthani language, express her deep love and longing for Krishna. Her poetry reflects her personal relationship with Krishna as her lover and lord. Mirabai's influence lies in her message of freedom and her unwavering devotion to Krishna, despite facing persecution. She has been the subject of numerous films, documentaries, and literature, and Hindu temples dedicated to her memory can be found, such as the one in Chittorgarh fort.
