Eknath Easwaran (1910-1999) was an Indian-born spiritual teacher, author, and translator known for his interpretations of Indian religious texts such as the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads. He was a professor of English literature at the University of Nagpur in India before moving to the United States in 1959 as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught courses on meditation. In 1961, he founded the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation and Nilgiri Press in northern California. Easwaran was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and developed a method of meditation called Passage Meditation, which involved silently repeating inspirational passages from various religious traditions. He authored over thirty books published by Nilgiri Press. Easwaran's first major work was his three-volume commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, and his book Meditation outlined his program of meditation and related practices.

His commentaries on Indian and Christian literature, such as the Essence of the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita for Daily Living, provide insights and practical guidance for living a spiritual life. Easwaran's works also include books on meditation, such as Passage Meditation and Conquest of Mind, and daily readers like God Makes the Rivers to Flow and Words to Live By. His teachings have been the subject of scientific research and have influenced various fields, including health, literature, and management. Easwaran's talks and teachings have been published in various formats, including audio and video recordings. He developed an eight-point program for spiritual growth, described in his book Passage Meditation. His books have been translated into more than 20 languages.
