79. Ashtamichira Mahadeva Temple

Ashtamichira Mahadeva temple is located at Ashtamichira in Thrissur district, Kerala. This is one among the 108 Shiva temples in Kerala and three forms of Shiva are worshipped in the temple.

Mrityunjaya Moorthy called Thekkum Thevar which is a swayambhu Shivling ,Parvathi Sametha Shiva called the Naduvil Thevar.and Kirathamoorthy, called Vadakkum Thevar, is worshipped as a subsidiary deity.

 

Puranam

 

The main sanctum of Naduvil Thevar is two storied square structure – a simple design but with very old charm. The sanctum of Swayambhoo Lord Shiva is a circular structure (Vatta-sreekovil), but the railings and new paint gives it a modern impression. Lord Shiva here is facing East. The well inside has a very old feel.

The upa devatas worshipped in the temple are Ganapathi, Sastha, Goddess Bhadrakali, Nagas or serpents and Bhagavan Sri Krishna.The shrine of Naduvil Thevar is a chathura sreekovil and it is two tier sanctum.The sreekovil of Thekkum Thevar is a round sanctum or vatta sreekovil.The temple has two entrances to the nalambalam. One sacrificial stone (Ballikallu) is placed outside the nalambalam and another one is inside in front of the Thekkum Thevar. 

Sevas

 

The annual Shivratri festival, which falls on the last week of February or first fortnight of March, is an important occasion in the temple.
