<p> </p> <p>Thirumuruganatheeswarar, Avudainayagi</p> <p>Moolavar and Ambal are facing west. There is a Deepasthambam at the entrance of the temple ( Might have used daily in olden days – now used on Karthikai Deepam day ). Nandhi, balipeedam and Dwajasthambam are in front of 16 pillar mandapam. In Koshtam Durgai and Lingothbavar. Dwarapalakas Dindi and mundi are beautiful.</p> <p>In the outer prakaram sannadhi for Shaniswarar, Navagrahas, Bhairavar, Pon maraithu vaidha idam ( பொன் மறைத்து வைத்த இடம் ), Pancha Lingangas, Suryan, Sandikeswarar, Dakshinamurthy ( in a separate sannadhi and not in koshtam ), Bhavaneeswarar, 63var.</p> <p>Ambal is in a separate Temple adjacent to moolavar shrine. At the entrance to moolavar sannadhi, on the right there are Three moorthams. Shiva in Veduvan ( Hunter ) facing west, Sundarar after lost his gifts given by by Cheraman Peruman King with a sorrow in his face and Sundarar after got back his gifts with a smile in his face are very beautiful.</p> <p>Aarmuganathar Sannadhi is famous here and is facing south and place is named after him.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p>

<p> </p> <p>This temple was believed to be built before 7th Century by Chera’s during the one of the 63 Nayanmar, Sundarar’s period, who has sung hymns of Lord Shiva of this temple. Lord Shiva in the form of Thief took away all the gifts donated by Cheraman Peruman, a King from Chera Nadu who became ardent devotee of Shiva and a friend of Sundarar.</p> <p> </p> <p>The temple was renovated and re-constructed and expanded during Kongu Chozhas, Vijayanagaras and Nayaks. The inscriptions of Kulothunga Chozha-I (1152 AD), Veera Rajendran ( 1222 AD), Vikrama Chozha-III ( 1267AD) are found on the sanctum sanctorum walls.</p> <p>The inscriptions mainly speaks about donation of Lands, money towards burning of Lamps, regular poojas and functions. The gifted lands periphery ( ellai ) are mentioned with directions. </p> <p> </p> <p> </p>

<p> </p> <p>The temple complex consists of Sanctum sanctorum, antarala, arthamandapam, mahamandapam and 16 pillar mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on the simple pathabhandha adhisthana with tripatta kumudha. The prastharam valabi has the bas relief of Avinashi Sthala purana and Cheraman Peruman and Sundarar’s journey to kailash instead of bootha ganas. A 2 tier nagara Vimana is over the prastharam.</p>
