Sri Pavala Vannar Temple Divya Desam In Kanchipuram, stands the two temples of Pachai Vannar and Pavalai Vannar, two shrines standing opposite to each other, two places of holiness where the Lord is mentioned by his colour. He is seen in emerald green at the Pachai Vannar and coral coloured at the Pavalai Vannar.

The temple of Pavalai Vannar was praised in the hymns of the Alwar saints as the 108 sacred abodes of Vishnu. Though Pachai Vannar temple is not mentioned in the hymns, both these temples are believed to constitute the divyadesam. The temples are said to have been built by the Pallava king Nandivarman II, with later contributions from Cholas and Vijayanagar kings.

Sri Pachai Vannar Temple and Sri Pavalai Vannar Temple (or Thiru Pavala Vannan)

Lord granted darshan to the Rishi. The Rishi put forth his questions. He asked, “Is it You who incarnated as Rama? How could You afford to let Ravana abduct Mother Sita? Could this happen without Your knowledge? Was it necessary that You had to travel long to Lanka to rescue Her with the help of Sri Anjaneya? Couldn’t You do it alone?”

Lord explained. “This was an avatar to please everyone who loved me. Lord Shiva is very fond of me who incarnated as Sri Anjaneya. Many joined me in my mission. I enjoyed the company of all who loved me.”

Adding, Lord further explained the family dharma that sons should respect and obey father and mother. Brothers should live in unity and how they should respect their sisters-in-law. How the characters of both men and women should be in order. This avatar was to set the rules for an ideal family.

Lord gave darshan to Sage Marichi as Pachai Vanna Perumal. Sage had his doubts cleared.

Lord Vishnu appears green as emerald, hence praised as Pachai Vanna Perumal – Pachai Vannam-emerald green. As He granted darshan to sage Marichi alone, Mothers are not with Him in the sanctum sanctorum. He granted darshan as Rama to the Rishi, hence worshipped as Lord Rama and Mother as Sita.

Mother Mahalakshmi blesses the devotees from a separate shrine. Generally Sri Chakra is installed in temples either opposite Mother’s shrine or nearby. Here, Sri Chakra is installed in the shrine itself. Mother blesses Her devotees in three forms, Sri Chakra Rupini, Mahalakshmi and Sita.

Divine serpent Adisesha, serving Lord as His bed in the Milk Ocean was born as Lakshmana in Ramavatara accompanying the Lord in His great mission of establishing Dharma. Thus, Lord honored Adisesha in His Ramavatara as His brother.

When the Lord granted darshan to Marichi, Adisesha could not come there as Adisesha. He begged the Lord to give him the chance of bearing Him. Obliging him, Lord appeared on his head in the form of Jyoti. Hence, Nagadeepam (lamp on Naga-serpent) is kept in Mother’s shrine.

Sri Pavala Vanna Perumal can be seen coral red in color, Goddess Pavalavali Thaayar has a separate shrine within the vicinity.

The legend has that Lord Brahma conducted a Yagna. He didn’t invite Goddess Saraswati and an infuriated Goddess Saraswati sent demons to create obstruction to the Yagna. At this point of time, Lord Brahma prayed to Lord Vishnu to protect the Yagna from the atrocities of the demons.

Lord Vishnu had fierce battle with the demons and beheaded all of them. Thus, the presiding deity of this temple is in coral red in color as a representation of aftermath of the war.

The Moolavar of this sthalam is Sri Pavala Vannar. Also called as “Paramapatha Nathan” – Moolavar in Irundha Thirukkolam on Aadhiseshan facing His thirumugham towards West Direction.

In Kanchipuram, there are two temples of Pachai Vannar and Pavalai Vannar. Two shrines standing opposite to each other, two places where the Lord is mentioned by His colour. He is seen in emerald green at the Pachai Vannar and coral coloured at the Pavalai Vannar.

The temple of Pavalai Vannar was praised in the hymns of the Azhwar saints as the 108 sacred abodes of Vishnu. Sri Pachai Vannar Temple is the 54th among 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu. Here Vishnu is worshipped as Sri Pavala Vannar Perumal with his consort Pavalavalli Thayar.

Lord Pavala Vannan Perumal is in standing posture facing west. There is another shrine opposite to this sannadhi about half kilometre away called Pacchai Vannar Sannadhi. Lord Pachai Vannan Perumal is seated on divine serpent Adiseshan. The two sannadhis together are considered as one divyadesam. It is said that both the Pacchai and Pavala Vannan perumal has to be worshipped, without leaving any one of them.

Lord Vishnu appears green as emerald, hence praised as Pachai Vanna Perumal – Pachai Vannam-emerald green. As He granted darshan to sage Marichi alone, no one is with Him in the Altar. He granted darshan as Lord Ramachandra to the Rishi, hence worshipped as Lord Rama and Mother Sita. Just opposite here is the Pavala Vanna Nathar temple, (red as a coral) one of the 108 Divya Desams. Worshipping Pachai Vanna Nathar and Pavala Vanna Nathar is a rare opportunity for the devotees.

The legend regarding the Pavala Vanna Perumal temple revolves around a yagna conducted by Lord Brahma. Goddess Saraswathy, angry that she was not a part of it, sent demons to create obstruction. Lord Vishnu, battled the demons and ensured that the yagna proceeded smoothly.

The God here is coral in colour. In the Pachai Vanna Perumal shrine, it is believed that the Lord gave boon to Sage Bhrigu that Mahalakshmi will be born as his daughter, hargavi. Subsequently Lord Vishnu married Bhargavi at this sacred place. In this temple, the Lord is emerald green in colour.

This temple is part of the famous Kanchipuram Divya Desam Yatra.
Though Pachai Vannar is not a divyadesam, both these temples usually considered as a single divyadesam and worshipped together. Devotees believe that if one visits one temple, visiting the other is mandatory. Book Tour Package to Sri Pavala Vannar Temple Kanchipuram
