History

The Hindu faith values the sandalwood tree as a sacred plant. It is said that goddess Lakshmi lives in the sandalwood tree; therefore, it is also known as Srigandha.

According to Vamana Purana the fragrant wood is recommended for worshipping Mahadeva. Goddess Lakshmi resides in this tree as per Brahma Vaivarta Purana. According to astrologers the roots are used as talisman to have the benevolent effect of the celestial body Rahu. It also stands for Krishna and Vishnu and is immensely sacred to the Indian people. In the past, religious gifts to gods and goddesses were made using wood from trees. Sandalwood fragments are used in the sculptures found in Buddhist monasteries and Indian temples. It has been an element of worship in India for countless years. It establishes a home for the soul after one has left the world and has a deep connection to their soul. Many religions hold this plant in high regard.

Sandal wood tree paste and oil are used in the worship of the gods. Even the axe used to cut this tree is fragrant because to the sandal wood. So Chandana is the name for something that is simply amazing. Chandan is used to purify holy locations.
