History

The Hindu Temple was located in Mount Pearl from 1976 to 1995. Responding to the needs of the growing community, a new temple was built at the present site.

The new facility was consecrated on May 7, 1995. There is a prayer hall, library and yoga room upstairs and a community hall and kitchen downstairs. The temple spires (dome and tower) were built in March 2002 at which time the temple celebrated the Kumbhabhishekam. Kumbhabhishekam is a sacred ceremony for sanctifying a newly constructed temple tower and dome.

The deity worshiped is Krishna. Krishna idol is made of marble. He is shown as a young man wearing a yellow silk dhoti, peacock feather in his crown, playing the flute. In this depiction he assumes a characteristic relaxed pose; he stands with one leg bent in front of the other and the flute raised to his lips. The name Krishna (is the 57th name in the Vishnu Sahasranamam, a collection of the 1000 names of Lord Vishnu) and means the Existence of Bliss.

The temple serves the religious, cultural and spiritual needs of the community. The children are given every opportunity to participate in doing puja and singing bhajans. Although the temple primarily is a place of worship for the Hindu community, it is open to people of all faiths.
