Hagiography

Pavhari Baba (1798-1898) was a Hindu ascetic and saint from Ghazipur, India. He was born in Premapur, Jaunpur, and studied under his uncle, who was a follower of the Ramanuja or Shri sect. After completing his education, he traveled extensively and was initiated into Yoga at Girnar in Kathiawar. Upon returning to Ghazipur, he built an underground hermitage where he practiced meditation and yoga.

Pavhari Baba was known for his humility, politeness, and spirit of welfare. There are several remarkable incidents associated with him, including an encounter with a thief who later became his disciple. Swami Vivekananda visited Ghazipur in 1890 and met Pavhari Baba. Although Vivekananda desired to become his disciple, he had a dream of his master, Ramakrishna, and realized that he should remain loyal to Ramakrishna alone.

Pavhari Baba's influence on Vivekananda was significant, and Vivekananda held him in high regard. Pavhari Baba's teachings emphasized the power of the mind to help and influence others. He advised Vivekananda to be patient, persevering, and loyal to his teacher.

Pavhari Baba's death is described as self-immolation. He did not leave his hermitage for several days, and smoke and the smell of burning flesh were noticed. This act was seen as a supreme sacrifice and offering his body as the last oblation to the Lord. Vivekananda learned about Pavhari Baba's death while he was in Almora.
