Hagiography

Pattinathar refers to two different Tamil individuals. The 10th-century Pattinathar was a poet whose works are included in the Shaivite canon, Tirumurai. The 14th-century Pattinathar was born into a wealthy merchant family but renounced his materialistic life to seek divinity. He became the guru of another ascetic philosopher, Pattirakiriyar, and composed philosophical songs to enlighten people. Pattinathar's samadhi is located in Tiruvottiyur, and there are statues and idols dedicated to him in various temples. In folklore, he is associated with Bharthari, a king who became his disciple and later attained salvation. Bharthari also wrote a collection of Tamil poetic verses called Meignana Pulambal.
