Hagiography

Gunatitanand Swami (1784-1867) was a prominent paramhansa of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya and the first spiritual successor of Swaminarayan according to the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS). Born in Gujarat, India, he received religious education under his father's guru before becoming a swami under Swaminarayan at the age of 25. Gunatitanand Swami held various administrative roles, including mahant of Junagadh mandir, and was revered for his spiritual discourses. BAPS considers him the first personal manifestation of Akshar in the Guru Parampara, while other dioceses within the Swaminarayan Sampradaya do not subscribe to this belief. Gunatitanand Swami's teachings are compiled in the book "Swamini Vato," and he is remembered for his contributions to the Swaminarayan fellowship and the propagation of spiritual metaphysics. He installed Bhagatji Maharaj as his successor and is believed to have handed over the key to Akshardham to him. Gunatitanand Swami's cremation site is marked by the famous Akshar Deri shrine.
