Hagiography

Sadhak Ramprasad Sen was an 18th-century Hindu Shakta poet and saint from Bengal. He composed devotional songs called Ramprasadi, which are dedicated to the goddess Kali and written in Bengali. Ramprasad was born into a Bengali Baidya family and showed a talent for poetry from an early age. He became well-known for his compositions that combined folk and classical melodies. Ramprasad's life is a mixture of biography, metaphor, and legend. He had a deep spiritual inclination and received guidance from Krishnananda Agamavagisha, a Tantric yogi. Despite working as an accountant, Ramprasad dedicated most of his time to spiritual practices and writing devotional songs. He gained recognition when Raja Krishnachandra appointed him as his court poet. Ramprasad's mystical experiences and devotion to Kali were highly regarded, even by sufi mystics and Nawab Sirajuddaula. He passed away during a Kali puja ceremony while immersed in the Ganges River, singing for Kali. Recent evidence suggests he was alive until at least 1794.

Work Done

He is known for his bhakti poems, called Ramprasadi, which are dedicated to the goddess Kali. Ramprasad combined the Bengali folk style of Baul music with classical melodies and kirtan, creating a new compositional form that influenced many poet-composers in Bengal. His songs, known as Ramprasadi Sangit, are still popular today and can be found in Shakta temples and pithas in Bengal. Ramprasad's life is a mix of biography, metaphor, and legend, with stories and legends depicting his devotion to Kali. He is regarded as a significant figure in the bhakti movement in Bengal and his songs continue to be widely sung and admired.
