Hagiography

Puran Puri was an 18th-century Indian monk and traveler. He belonged to the Puri sub-order of Dashanami Sampradaya swamis and embarked on extensive journeys. His travels included visiting various Hindu pilgrimage sites such as Rameswaram, Puri, and Gangotri, as well as locations in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the Middle East, Moscow, and Tibet. Puran Puri's travelogue was recorded by Jonathan Duncan, a British Resident in Benares. He had encounters with important figures like Ahmed Shah Abdali in Afghanistan and Karim Khan Zand in Iran. Puran Puri's image, depicting him in a penance pose with raised hands, became popular in Europe and contributed to the fascination with yogis and ascetics.
