Hagiography

Prem Pal Singh Rawat, also known as Maharaji, is an international speaker and author. He is the youngest son of Indian guru Hans Ram Singh Rawat, the founder of Divine Light Mission. After his father's death, Prem Rawat assumed his role at a young age and gained followers in the West. His teachings focus on meditation, personal resources, and peace education. He established The Prem Rawat Foundation in 2001 to support his work and humanitarian efforts. Throughout his career, Rawat has received recognition for his message of peace.

Work Done

Prem Rawat's teachings emphasize the individual's need for fulfillment through turning within to find a constant source of peace and joy. He teaches meditation techniques to access this inner experience. The teachings have been influenced by the North Indian Sant Mat tradition but also have distinct elements. Prem Rawat's teachings are described as personal and individual, with no associated social structure or rituals. He has been criticized for a lack of intellectual content in his public discourses.

The meditation techniques taught by Prem Rawat are referred to as the "Knowledge." Practitioners describe it as an internal and highly individual experience. Rawat asks practitioners to keep the techniques confidential and allow others to prepare to receive the experience themselves.

Prem Rawat has founded several organizations throughout his life. The Divine Light Mission was the first organization associated with him and was later disbanded. Elan Vital and Words of Peace International are organizations that support his work and promote his teachings. The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF) focuses on humanitarian efforts and has provided aid in war-torn and impoverished areas.

Prem Rawat has received media attention throughout his career. Scholars have described him as a charismatic leader, and his teachings have attracted followers. Estimates of his followers vary over time, with numbers ranging from millions to hundreds of thousands. Critics and supporters have different perspectives on his teachings and impact.
