Hagiography

Pramukh Swami Maharaj, born Shantilal Patel, was the fifth spiritual successor of Swaminarayan and the guru and president of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), a major branch of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya. He received initiation as a Hindu Swami in 1940 and was appointed president of BAPS in 1950. During his tenure, he oversaw the growth of BAPS into a global organization, with over one million devotees and thousands of temples and centers worldwide. He built more than 1,100 Hindu temples, including the Swaminarayan Akshardham temples in New Delhi and Gandhinagar. Pramukh Swami Maharaj was known for his humility, spirituality, and efforts in promoting interfaith harmony. He passed away in 2016 and was succeeded by Mahant Swami Maharaj.

Work Done

Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of BAPS (Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha), held significant theological and spiritual roles in the organization. He was considered the perfect devotee and the ideal swami, serving as a model for emulation by all spiritual aspirants. Devotees believed that he embodied the sacred scriptures and exemplified the ideals of the religion. His conduct and reverence for his gurus were seen as examples of devotion. Through his association, devotees aimed to rid themselves of vices and worldly attachments, seeking liberation and attainment of God's divine abode. As the essential spiritual link with God, offering devotion to Pramukh Swami was believed to be equivalent to offering it to Swaminarayan himself. Pramukh Swami also provided guidance and counseling to devotees, addressing personal, family, and business matters. His advice emphasized belief in God and faith, and he often counseled young devotees to focus on education. His purpose in providing guidance was to relieve devotees of worldly anxieties so they could focus on their spiritual progress.
